- Visa Requirements

AAll incoming exchange students are responsible for managing their own visa applications. The Erasmus Office is not involved in this application process.

• Application Timing: You are strongly advised to file your application as soon as possible, as processing times can be lengthy.
• Where to Apply: Contact the Turkish embassy or consulate in your home country for specific requirements and travel information.
• Visa Exemptions: Some citizens of EU/EEA countries may not require a visa for entry. However, special conditions may still apply to non-EU/EEA citizens even if they hold a residence permit from a European country.
• Supporting Documents: You will receive a letter of acceptance or confirmation from YTU once your application is approved by the Department of Economics. This letter is often required for your visa application.
• Passport Validity: You must provide a valid passport copy in your online Erasmus application; national ID cards are not accepted for this purpose.

Turkish Citizens Living Abroad: Holders of a "Mavi Kart" or Turkish national ID do not need a visa or residence permit. Simply upload a copy of your ID or passport to the YTU Erasmus application.

- Student Residence Permit

If your mobility in Istanbul will exceed 90 days, you must apply for a student residence permit regardless of whether you were exempt from an initial entry visa.

• When to Apply: You must apply within the legal period of your stay. If you are applying for an extension, you must do so 60 days before your current permit expires.
• Passport Requirement: Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond your intended period of stay.

Application Steps:

• Online Application:Register at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr.
• Fingerprints:Provide your biometric fingerprint records at the designated immigration office.
• Document Submission:Submit your completed file to the YTU International Students Office (Davutpaşa Campus, Taşbina, Room A-1019).
• University Review:YTU will deliver your documents to the provincial immigration office within 15 days of your application date.
• Tracking:Monitor your status via SMS, email, or the e-ikamet website. Approved residence cards are mailed directly to the address provided in your application.

Shared Apartments & Dormitories

International students typically choose between sharing a flat with other students or staying in a private dormitory. If you are looking for these alternatives, we highly recommend contacting ESN Yildiz or your assigned student buddies, as they can provide local guidance and connect you with other incoming students.

Renting An Apartment

Renting a private flat in Istanbul can be expensive and requires careful planning.

• Lease Agreements: Always read your lease thoroughly before signing to ensure you understand all terms.
• Security Deposit: Landlords usually require a deposit equal to one or two months' rent. This deposit is held to cover any potential property damage or early termination of the lease; it must be returned if the property is in good condition at the end of your stay.
• Upfront Costs: prepared to pay the first month’s rent and the deposit before moving in.

Arrival & Informing The Erasmus Office

We advise you to arrive at least a few days before the semester starts to finalize your housing. Once you have settled, you must inform the Erasmus Office of your local address and phone number so they can reach you for official matters.

Where to Live?

The Economic Engineering program is based at the Davutpaşa Campus (Esenler).

• Nearby Neighborhoods: Areas like Davutpaşa, Esenler, Zeytinburnu, Bakırköy, and Bahçelievler are closest to the campus. Davutpaşa is generally more affordable and offers a shorter commute.

Lively Student Hubs:Many students prefer living in Beşiktaş, Kadıköy, or Şişli for their vibrant social life, cafes, and nightlife. Beşiktaş is a major student district, and YTU provides shuttle services between the Yıldız and Davutpaşa campuses to help with the commute.

How to Search

• Online Platforms: Popular Turkish websites for rentals include sahibinden.com and hurriyetemlak.com. You can also use student-specific platforms like Erasmus Play.

Social Media:Facebook groups such as "Erasmus Istanbul Flats" or "Sharing Flats in Istanbul" are active communities for finding roommates.

Safety Warning:Always visit a room in person before paying any money, as pictures can sometimes be misleading. Be cautious of owners who pressure you into a quick decision.

Private Dormitories vs. Apartments

• Private Dorms: Often offer "all-inclusive" prices that cover electricity, water, internet, and cleaning. They are a stable choice for those who want to avoid the hassle of managing monthly utility bills.

Apartments:Provide more independence and privacy but come with additional responsibilities like setting up your own internet and paying separate bills.

Istanbul is served by two major airports, one on each continent. Regardless of where you land, there are efficient ways to reach the university.

1. From Istanbul Airport (IST) – European Side

This is the main international hub and is located northwest of the city center.

• By Metro (M11):You can take the M11 metro line from the airport toward the city. You will likely need to transfer at Kağıthane or Gayretteppe to reach lines connecting to the M1A.
• By Havaist Bus: These are comfortable shuttle buses that run 24/7 to various hubs in the city. You can check schedules and routes at hava.ist.
• By Taxi:A taxi to the Davutpaşa area typically takes 40–60 minutes depending on traffic.

2. From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) – Anatolian Side

Located on the Asian side, this airport mostly handles low-cost carriers and domestic flights.

• By Metro (M4):Take the M4 metro line from the airport. To reach the European side, you will need to transfer to the Marmaray (undersea train) at Ayrılık Çeşmesi and then switch to the M1A at Yenikapı.
• By Shuttle: You can use Havaist (or Havabus) to reach Kadıköy or Taksim, then use public transport to reach the campus.

GETTING TO DAVUTPAŞA CAMPUS

The heart of your studies will be the Davutpaşa Campus. Here is how to ensure you arrive at the right gate:

• The M1A Metro Line:Your "home" line is the M1A (Yenikapı–Atatürk Airport) line. You must get off at the Davutpaşa-YTU station.
• Campus Entry: The metro station is located right at one of the main entrances of the campus. From there, you can walk or take the internal ring shuttles to the Department of Economics (İİBF).
• Istanbulkart: This is the only card you need for all buses, metros, ferries, and trams. You can buy one at any airport or major metro station. As a student, you will eventually apply for a "Student Istanbulkart" which offers heavily discounted fares.

The Davutpaşa Campus is not just a place of study; it is a site of significant historical importance. The campus is built on the grounds of the former Davutpaşa Barracks (Davutpaşa Kışlası). Originally constructed during the Ottoman era to serve the military, the "Taşbina" (Stone Building) and other historical structures have been meticulously restored to house our faculties, including the Department of Economics. Walking through the campus feels like walking through history, with the grand architecture of the past meeting the innovation of the future.

The campus is exceptionally large, providing a spacious and "isolated" atmosphere that offers a peaceful retreat from the surrounding urban bustle. Despite its size, getting around is easy thanks to the internal ring buses that provide frequent transport within the campus boundaries.
